The dynamic and enthusiastic Tammy Claasen, Fleur du Cap winemaker, owes her passion for wine to growing up at the foothills of the Helderberg in Stellenbosch and today together with her father and husband, share the wine industry as a career.
Tammy spent an idyllic childhood on a fruit farm, now wine farm, and from a young age knew she wanted to pursue a career in agriculture. Whilst at a high school, a career day introduced her to the fascinating world of wine – before this moment she never knew that one could study to become a winemaker. She shadowed her father in the trade shortly after he entered the wine industry, and was instantly hooked!
She completed the BScAgric in Viticulture and Oenology degree at the University of Stellenbosch and it was during her final year harvesting at a local winery, that she realised she belonged in the cellar.
Her approach to winemaking is minimal intervention, guided by the quality of the fruit, and using old and new blended techniques in crafting exceptional wines. She thoroughly enjoys the versatility of working with Shiraz grapes and spent a few harvests at one of the top Shiraz producers in the world where her affinity for this varietal was sparked.
An avid reader, Tammy re-reads “The Alchemist” at the start of each new year to realign herself before the demanding year ahead and start of harvest. Guided by her favourite quote from the book, “And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it”, she notes her goals for the year ahead and waits with anticipation they unfold.
When Tammy is not living her dream as a winemaker, she crafts scented natural candles and enjoys singing with her music loving family.
